The town of Ioannina sprawls around the picturesque Lake of Pamvotida. This natural monument providing a unique trademark for the area with its still water and small island.
Ioannina has always been a multicultural town having been dominated by Jewish, Christian and Islamic influences in the past. The coexistence of these three cultures is evident today in the town’s historic centre.
Ioannina town has known wealth and aristocracy throughout its history, much of which came from the town’s jewellery trade. Ioannina’s jewellery designs are still synonymous with the area.
Another thing Ioannina is recognised for is its gastronomic delights. There will be plenty of time to sample these before heading off on a drive to the town of Igoumenitsa.
This tour includes a visit to the Castle of Ioannina and a boat trip to the Island of Lake Pamvotis. It starts off at the Municipal Ethnographic Museum (Ali Pasha Mosque), a museum that celebrates and commemorates the three dominant cultures of Ioannina’s history (Jewish, Christian, Muslim).
Your tour embarks on a pedestrian exploration through the cobblestone streets of the old city. You will soon arrive at the “heart of the Castle”, the Kale citadel. After that, you will have a short walk to the docks by the lake, where boats will be waiting to take you on a short voyage to the Island of Legends; the island of the notorious Ali Pasha and Lady Frosini; the island of 7 Byzantine monasteries.
You will visit the Monastery of Philanthropini and view its beautiful frescoes dating back to the mid 16th century. Here too, you will see the Museum of the Greek Revolution, locally known as the “House of Ali Pasha”; this being the final refuge of the infamous Ottoman landlord of Ioannina.
During the day you will have plenty of free time to enjoy the traditional cuisine of Ioannina and for a chance to buy some souvenirs and traditional sweets.
