    Description

If you love hiking and learning about history and nature while you do it, this tour will have plenty for you. On this tour you will be guided by one of our guides that is expert in local history, plants and wildlife.
Your tour starts at the heart of Corfu town, San Rocco square. Your guide will lead you on a hike that passes by the British cemetery, which was established during the British Protectorate period. It was used to bury British officials, soldiers and residents, but resembles a beautiful garden more than a cemetery. It has blossoms all year round from a variety of flowers, bushes and trees.
You will continue your hike up the hill of Salvatore arriving at the area of Garitsa. This once poor neighborhood used to be home to workers and refugees of the Asia Minor catastrophe. Also, in Garitsa are the remains of several Byzantine churches, a unique style of building unlike those found on the rest of the island.
Hiking through verdant streets you will reach the area of Kanoni where you will see extensive archaeological works from the ancient town and explore the “lungs” of Corfu town, Paleopolis. Situated by the sea, this 26-hectare estate contains over 2,000 species of flowers, plants, and ancient trees; the shade of which offers blissful respite from the Greek Summer heat.
You will continue your walk through the park to the beach of Kardaki, whose concrete pier is cooled by the shade of its trees. This is a favorite spot for local people to enjoy a quick dip to cool off.
You will also see the ruins of ancient Greek temples and other archaeological sites. Inside the estate is the Mon Repos Palace, which was built in 1831 by the British and used as a Summer residence by the former Greek royal family.
Heading towards the Old Town, your walk will take you past the wooden expanse of Garitsa Grove on your way to Spianada square. Along the way you will be able to view the old Fortress and the picturesque seaside promenade which is now a landing point for the many yachts which anchor in Garitsa Bay during the Summer.
Your walk will take you to the Esplanade Square, the central square of Corfu, which was built in the style of the European Royal Gardens. This is the largest town square in the Balkans and one of the largest in Europe.
You will visit the Boschetto gardens and also the gardens of the city’s palace of Sant Michael and Saint George. These gardens, with their vintage Venetian stone aquariums, exotic plants, flowers and trees; overlook the bay through fortifications and battlements.
To complete this wonderful hiking-tour you will return to Corfu town and its gardens for a well-deserved drink and refreshments in the numerous cafes, taverns and restaurants of the historic center.
